The Yoshi Horohito fix:
Here is what I did and it seems to be working for me, as I just rebooted and risked my computer not working to help the rest of you.
Now I have Windows 2000 professional and have no idea if this is a fix for Windows XP, but checking won't hurt.
So I went to start and then search, to search my files and folders for "boot.ini". I came up with a boot.ini located in my Eve folder (good job guys) and a boot.ini.backup located in C:\WINNT\pss. I copied the file called boot.ini.backup to my desktop and opened it with notepad......it looked pretty ok based on what you guys have been typing as what should be in it. I went up to file then save as and saved it as boot.ini.
On my desktop it still had the .backup extension just to **** me off so I clicked on the name of the file to rename it and simply deleted the .backup part of the name thus leaving it called boot.ini
I then copied this new boot.ini file (it magically transformed its icon appearance when I deleted .backup) to my C drive. I did this by opening "my computer" then doubble clicking the C: drive and dragging the boot.ini file in there.
I did the test to see if I had a boot.ini file now by doing what CCP said to check: Start: Control Panel: System: Advanced: Startup and Recovery: Settings.
This time it didn't alert me to my boot.ini file being missing, originally it had.
I then crossed my fingers and restarted my computer as it was the only way I would find out if this boot.ini.backup file that I had converted had all the info in it necessary to allow my computer to actually reboot correctly.
Since I am making this post here, I'm assuming this fixed my computer and the boot.ini file I put in the C: drive is still there and hasn't re-disappeared or anything.
So hopefully that will help the few of you who have not rebooted your computer yet and are waiting for CCP to figure something like this out for you.......

Originally by: Elryth Poisonblade Ok, so I downloaded restarted don't have a boot.ini. Yes a very easy problem to fix but i have no xp cd here (at uni) and my desktop has no floppy and my laptop can't write cds. Any ideas? I have an external SATA hdd that i can link up to my laptop, and a usb hdd mp3 that can be used as mass storage.
Thanks in advance
Do a file search for boot.ini, if you find a file called boot.ini.backup copy it to your C: drive and delete the .backup part of its name, just leaving it called boot.ini
In theory that will fix it IF your version of windows created a .backup copy of boot.ini when windows was installed......on Windows 2000 it did.....so good luck

Originally by: Crawthar can someone help me? iv checked the harddrive, made files visible and unhidden protected files, but i couldnt see the boot.ini file. However when i search my files it shows a boot.ini.backup. Is my computer ok?
Copy that backup file to your C: drive and then click on the name of the file and remove the .backup part of the file name.
Yes that SHOULD fix it......
